Speaking at the launch of Khan Monsoon plantation campaign 2020 on Friday in the city of Kahuta in Punjab province.
He said that the government has started a campaign to plant 10 billion trees across the country. Associated Press of Pakistan Reported.
Noting that the number of forests in Pakistan has declined sharply, he said that at the time of partition from the Indian sub-continent, the number of trees in the country had reduced to dangerous levels.
He also mentioned the alarming level of pollution in Lahore and said that the lack of trees is a serious threat to human health and would be addressed on priority by his government.
He urged people to join hands in achieving the goal of 10 billion trees to fight climate change and environmental pollution.
Khan said that in the last two years, his government had planted 30 million trees, while the new nursery was working at top speed to increase this number to one billion by June next year.
“I am sure that our government will be able to meet this ambitious target of one billion trees in its five-year term,” Khan said.
He said that Pakistan has 12 diverse ecological zones and it was a national obligation to conserve and protect natural systems and its flowers and fauna.
