Outside midfielder Mesut Ozil in Arsenal’s side was left out of their 25-man Premier League squad for the 2020-21 season released on Tuesday, raising the possibility that he played his last game for the North London club is.
Ozil, 32, who is contracted with Arsenal as of June 2021 and earns £ 350,000 ($ 452,830) per week, has not played on behalf of Mikel Arteta this season.
The German playmaker, who last played for Arsenal in March, was dropped from his Europa League squad earlier this month.
Arteta said last month that his team was “developing” and that Ozil would find it difficult to find a place in the team, doubting his future at the club.
Defender Socratis Papastathopoulos was also dropped from Arsenal’s Premier League squad as he too was excluded from the Europa League squad.
Elsewhere, Chelsea named Petr Cech, who played for the club from 2004–2015 and currently works as a technical consultant at Stamford Bridge, as emergency goalkeeper cover.
Cech retired as a player in May 2019 after Chelsea played for Arsenal in their Europa League final defeat.
“This is a precautionary step due to the COVID-19 crisis that is currently unprecedented. He took a position as a non-contract player, ”the club said in a statement.
Manchester United dropped defender Phil Jones and goalkeeper Sergio Romero out of their squad, while Denny Rose was left out after Tottenham Hotspur failed to step into another Tier Championship club at the transfer deadline.
League leader Everton left Yenik Bolsie after playing for the Toffees for the last time in May 2018, after failing to make the squad for the match this season of 31 years.
Premier League clubs can register 25 first-team players over the age of 21, of which at least eight must be homegrown.
A ‘homegrown’ player is defined by the Premier League as a player of any nationality who is 21 or older on 1 January 2021 and spends on an English league team between the ages of 16 and 21 .
