New Delhi: A day after Indian Railways requested for the eligibility of private participation for passenger train operations, several leaders of opposition parties objected to the move and asked the government to reconsider its decision.
On Wednesday, the national transporter said it had invited requests for qualification for private participation for passenger train operations on 109 pairs of routes through 151 modern trains. It said that it plans to allow private entities to operate passenger trains and the private sector investment from this project will be around Rs 30,000 crore.
Let’s take a look at some political reactions of leaders of opposition parties –
Rahul Gandhi, Congress
Railways are the only lifeline of the poor and the government wants to take them away. Whatever you want to snatch away. However, remember, the people of the country will respond.
Randeep Surjewala, Congress
Now the poor man’s railway is moving towards privatization. Your words are always different from your actions. If the importance of PM’s talk is over, then what can anyone say about the direction in which the country is moving.

Mahua Moitra, TMC
So MOR quietly announced Privatization of railways Tomorrow with RFQ for 109 routes where private players can set fares for 35 years! No discussion, no debate. Using Kovid as an excuse to express disagreement and sell the family silver!

Ashok Gehlot, Congress
Privatization of railways is a decision that goes against the common people of the country. It really is a lifeline, as Rahul Gandhi Ji said and this service should not be privatized.
Sitaram Yechury, CPM
The decision to privatize the railway is self-reliance and not self-sufficiency for personal profits. Using the Indian railway network and running private passenger trains on it is to allow super-profits for private players. Indian Railways is a social good on public service, assuming that it will be harmful to both the Railways and the country. This decision should be rescinded.
