Sukkur: The PPP on Thursday completely defeated the JUI-F and GDA candidates to retain the PS-70 Matali seat.

According to unofficial results, PPP candidate Dada Muhammad Halepoto won the by-election with 44,893 votes.

JUI-F candidate Maulana Gul Hassan came second with 6,342 votes.

The seat fell vacant on March 23 after the death of PPP MPA Bashir Ahmed Halepoto.

The former MPA was first elected from PS-55 in 2013 and then re-elected from PS-70 during the 2018 general elections. He was a member of the Sindh Assembly’s Standing Committee on Labor and Human Resources.

After his death, the PPP nominated its nephew Dada Muhammad Halepoto for the by-election against JUI-F candidate Maulana Gul Hassan and 10 other candidates.

The constituency has 166,809 votes out of which 91,587 are males and 75,222 are females.

A total of 123 polling stations were set up for today’s by-elections, of which 41 were declared sensitive and 12 highly sensitive. Considering the situation, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) deployed 1,671 police personnel and 395 Rangers personnel.

Deployed officials bore fruit as no untoward incident was reported from any of the polling stations, but there has been intense discussion among supporters of some candidates.

In today’s poll, 57,620 votes were cast and the turnout was 35.07 percent.

In the 2018 general elections, the late Bashir Ahmed Halepoto got 44,385 votes while GDA candidate Riaz Ahmed got 22,967 votes.

Shortly after the victory, the PPP chairman took to Twitter to celebrate his party’s victory in the by-elections.
