Former President and veteran politician, Pranab Mukherjee, who was admitted to a hospital in New Delhi earlier this month, died today (31 August) after suffering from septic shock due to a lung infection.

The news was confirmed by Mr. Mukherjee’s son on Twitter.

Septic shock is a life-threatening health emergency that severely drops blood pressure levels and can also lead to organ failure and tissue death (gangrene). The condition requires acute and critical medical care. According to experts, septic shock mortality is also around 50 percent.

A septic shock occurs when infection-fighting chemicals are released into the bloodstream and trigger inflammation and become potentially fatal. Symptoms of septic shock can range from high fever, low blood pressure readings, numbness in the body, mild hands, disorientation and difficulty in breathing. It spreads quickly, so it helps to get emergency health care.

Sepsis can be triggered by any health complication, but for the elderly, the risk is significantly higher. Pre-existing conditions can make it dangerous along with free immunity.

The 84-year-old was hospitalized for brain clot surgery on August 10, while the former president was diagnosed as COVID +, prior to the surgery, he immediately underwent an operation to treat brain clot.

On Tuesday (August 11), doctors at the Army Research and Referral Hospital, Delhi Cantonment issued a statement saying that Mukherjee’s health remained critical and he had not shown any improvement so far. Doctors said that when his critical parameters were stable, he was in a comatose state, placed on a ventilator.

Mukherjee, who served as the country’s president between 2012-2017, was rushed to the hospital in an emergency. It is reported that he suffered from a massive fall in the bathroom, after which he developed neurological complications and, therefore, had to undergo life-saving surgery.

The Bharat Ratna awardee tweeted a tweet alerting people to her COVID diagnosis before being taken for surgery:

“On a trip to the hospital for a different procedure, I tested positive for COVID-19 today. I request those who came in contact with me last week to appease self-isolation and COVID-19 To test for, ”

The president’s son, Abhijeet Mukherjee, also made a statement on social media, stating that his ‘fighter’ father was still in a critical condition, but was slowly responding to medical intervention, for his prayers. Thanked the well-wishers. His daughter Sharmishtha Mukherjee also issued a similar statement.

He is survived by his three children, Abhijeet, Sharmishtha and Indrajit after the death of his wife in the year 2015.
