The village of Hatras has become a hotbed of protests this week following the death of a 19-year-old Dalit girl in the village, which was allegedly gang-raped and tortured by four neighboring countries. She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital on Tuesday morning.

Her family alleges she was attacked on the basis of caste, by upper-caste men because she was a Dalit – the lowest caste.

Protests erupted over allegations that police did not take his case seriously because of his status, and sparked outrage on Wednesday when the family alleged that police raided the house at night against their wishes. His body was exhumed.

A 144 order was once issued to stop a gathering of more than five people in the village. The area was also considered a Corona virus content zone, barring outsiders from entering, which some opposition leaders claimed was a politically motivated move in an effort to contain the unrest. ۔

On Thursday morning, Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi, who spoke in support of the victim’s family, tried to reach Hatras to meet the family and protesters. His car was stopped by police about 100 miles from the village, and the leaders continued on foot.

A wall of police blocked their way, and Rahul Gandhi was pushed to the floor by officers, who then took him into custody. “I stand here peacefully. I want to march to Hatras alone. Section 144 deals with the People’s Assembly. I will go to Hatras alone. On what basis are you detaining me? Gandhi was heard telling officers when they arrested him.

Speaking to the crowd, Rahul said: “The police just pushed me, charged me with a stick and threw me on the ground. I want to ask, can only Modi walk in this country? Can’t the common man walk? Our car stopped, so we started walking.

Congress party leaders were accused by ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ministers of escalating tensions by visiting the village and engaging in “political tourism”.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the matter has been handed over to a special investigation team and will be sent for trial soon.

A police forensic report released on Thursday said the 19-year-old girl was not raped, although it was not in line with the Delhi hospital report where she was admitted and died. Earlier, the girl had her own account with her family and police.

The alleged rape has exposed the issue of sexual violence against lower caste women, especially in Uttar Pradesh. India is the most dangerous country in the world to become a woman and it is these lower caste women who are the victims of sexual violence. Over the past month, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed several incidents of rape and murder of young Dalit girls, the highest incidence of caste-based violence in India.

On Thursday, news broke about a 22-year-old Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh who had been drugged and gang-raped while applying for admission to a local school two days earlier. She too later succumbed to her injuries.
