Researchers create 3D-printed nose swabs for Kovid testing

New York: Researchers have developed a 3D-printed nasopharyngeal (NP) swab using a point-of-care 3D printer in response to a significant lack of NP swab for the Kovid-19 test.

The tilted NP swab, which collects a test sample of nasal secretions from the back of the nose and throat for laboratory analysis, is the current standard of care for the diagnosis of Kovid-19.
It consists of a narrow plastic rod and a tip in a bent polyester material.
“Kovid-19 first appears in the nasopharyngeal regions and from there enters the respiratory system,” Dekker explained.
The final prototype, which was developed using a Formlabs printer and surgical grade resin, was sent to infectious disease specialists for validation testing.
“We need to determine whether the 3D NP swab can collect enough viral cells and hold them for three days, and that the resin will not interfere with the test results,” she said.
To compare the performance of the 3D NP swab with the tilted broom, the team began clinical trials at several sites.
At the three testing sites, 291 patients (ages 14–94), who were hospitalized or seen in the emergency room, were tested for Coquid-19 using a swarm sweep and 3D swab.
The 3D swab demonstrated statistically similar results for the slab tilted in head-to-head trials.
“The results were very positive. Clinical trials have shown that 3D nasal swabs performed as well – or, in some cases, better – swarm swabs,” Decker said.
