According to a statement on the tournament website, veteran tennis player Roger Federer has dropped out of the 2021 edition of the Australian Open. Six-time Australian Open champion Federer will miss the first Grand Slam of the year for the first time in 22 years.
“Finally Roger ran out of time to prepare himself for the rigors of a Grand Slam and is deeply disappointed that he will not come to Melbourne in 2021.
“The Australian Open has always held a special place in his heart – remember it was Roger who first called the AO a ‘happy slam’.”
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tilley quoted on the website, “We wish him all the best in preparation for a comeback later in the year and to see him in Melbourne in 2022.”
