The rupee closed on a flat note against the US currency on Monday and fell 2 paise to 73.37, as domestic stock markets were trading with significant gains.
The local unit opened at 73.38 against the US dollar in the interbank forex market and finally ended the day at 73.37 against the greenback, which is just 2 paise less than the previous close of 73.35.
During the session, the local unit saw an intra-day of 73.35 and a low of 73.42 against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, the Dollar Index, which estimates the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.17 percent lower at 0.172.
On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex was up 433.91 points to 40,416.89 and the broader NSE Nifty was trading 106.55 points up to 11,869 points.
As per provisional exchange data, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market as they held shares worth Rs 479.59 crore on a net basis on Friday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 0.44 percent to USD 42.74 a barrel.
