Hyderabad: The first confirmed Kovid-19 case in India was reported in Kerala on January 30, while the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of Indian strains with roots in China was in circulation until November 2019.

The viral strain found in India’s first Kovid-19 case in Kerala was of Wuhan ancestor, while the discovery of Hyderabad (clade I / A3i) is unique because it has its origins not in China but in Southeast Asia. CCMB director Dr. Mishra of Rakesh said that the exact country of origin of this new clade is not known.
As far as the most recent common ancestor of the new strain (Clade I / A3i) is concerned, it was in circulation between January 17 and February 25, with a median period of February 8. Another clade, A2A, which is the dominant shadow, had a tMRCA of 2 January with a potentially emergence period between 13 January 2019 and 22 January 2020 in India.
The team, which included researchers from the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB), Delhi and the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, Ghaziabad, noted that the new clade is not found anywhere else in the world. It is also different from the other 10 previously known clones discovered.
The new clade was introduced from a single point in India. It was also from the same outbreak. Later it saw rapid spread spread across many regions across the country. As part of the study, the team performed whole genome sequencing for 64 genomes, making a total of 361 genomes from India. They also did dating for various groups of the viral genome.
Dr. Mishra said that Clade I / A3i sequenced and deposited 41% of all genomes from several states in India. Globally, 3.5% of genomes, which to date could not be mapped to any known known clusters, fall into this newly defined clade. The I / A3i clade is represented in 145 genomes (41.2%) and represented from 16 of 19 states from which the gene originated.
Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Delhi have the highest proportion of this new clade, followed by Bihar, Karnataka, UP, West Bengal, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan have a genome under clade I / A3i.
