Severe Kovid-19 can damage brain, preliminary study finds

London: A preliminary study of patients hospitalized with Kovid-19 found that the disease could cause brain damage, causing symptoms such as stroke, inflammation, psychosis and dementia in some severe cases.
The study gives the first detailed description on a wide range of neurological complications of Kovid-19, the researchers said, and underscores the need for larger studies to discover the mechanisms behind them and to aid in the search for treatment.
“This is (is) an important snapshot of brain-related complications in hospitalized patients. It is important that we continue to gather this information to truly fully understand the virus,” Sara College, a university The Professor of College London said he co-led the work.
The study, published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry on Thursday, looked at 125 cases from across the UK. Researcher Benedict Michael of the University of Liverpool said it is important to note that it focuses on serious matters.
Data was collected between 2 April and 26 April – when the disease was spreading rapidly in the UK.

The most common brain complication seen was stroke, reported in 125 of 77 patients. Of these, most were in over 60 patients, and most were due to blood clots in the brain, known as ischemic stroke.

The study also found that 39 out of 125 patients showed signs of confusion or behavioral changes reflecting an altered mental state. Nine of these had brain dysfunction, known as encephalopathy, and seven had brain inflammation, or encephalitis.
Michael stated that the findings were an important initial step towards defining Kovid-19’s effect on the brain. “We now need detailed studies to understand potential biological mechanisms … so we can explore potential therapies,” he said.
