Somalia News: Police say 19 prisoners, guards killed in riots in Somalia jail | world News

NAIROBI: A Somali police official says that at least 19 people were killed during the riots in the Central Jail SomaliaRajdhani on Monday evening.
Abdakani Mohammed Qalaf, spokesman of the police force in charge of the jails, told reporters that the dead included 15 prisoners and four guards. He said the situation is normal, but did not provide any details.
The commander of the custodial corps, General Mahad Abdirahman, told reporters that the violence began when an inmate grabbed an officer’s gun and went into a shooting spree.
In the chaos, other prisoners, including some sentenced on terrorism charges, recovered guns from Gir guards.
The prison has some members of al-Qaeda-linked extremist group al-Shabaab.
This was the first such riot in jail in recent memory.
