The United Nations Health Agency says the world’s largest randomized trial of Kovid-19 treatment has found “conclusive evidence”, a drug used to treat US President Donald Trump when he is ill, Which has little or no effect in severe cases.
The World Health Organization on Friday announced the long-awaited results of its six-month “Solidarity Therapeutics Trial”, which seeks to see if existing drugs can have an effect on coronoviruses.
The study, which was not peer reviewed, found that four treatments tested – remedisvir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir / ritonavir and interferon – were reported within about a month or whether hospitalized patients were recovered Had “little or no effect”.
Most of them were already rejected. But rapeseedvir, which is a riposed malaria drug, is classified as standard of care in the United States, and has been approved for use against Kovid-19 in the UK and EU. The supply of the drug has become limited, and the European Medicine Agency is now reviewing whether Remedisvir is the cause of kidney problems reported by some patients.
Martin Landre, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Oxford University, said the WHO test results for hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir were consistent with a previous British study that he co-led.
“The big story is that Remedisvir has no meaningful effect on survival,” he said in a statement. He said the drug is recommended in some countries, but there are significant concerns about supply, cost and access.
“It is a drug to be given by intravenous infusion for 5 to 10 days,” which costs about $ 2,550 per treatment course. “COVID affects millions of people and their families around the world. We need scalable, affordable and equitable treatment.
Remedisvir was included in a cocktail of treatments given to President Trump after testing positive for coronovirus.
The WHO said the study, covering more than 30 countries, looked at the effects of treatment on overall mortality, whether patients needed breathing machines or not, and how long it took patients to recover in hospitals.
