new Delhi: Supreme court Asked on thursday Government How the top court used the AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) decision to raise demands from various PSUs to deal with the issue.
The SC reprimanded the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for raising demands of Rs 4 lakh crore from various PSUs under the guise of its decision on AGR and threatened to initiate contempt proceedings against the authorities concerned.
It asked telecom operators to give details about how much revenue they are earning now and how they want to pay their dues.
In giving relief to telecom companies, the SC said that AGR would consider a plea to give more time to pay its dues on the charges. It further asked the companies to ensure that they would have to pay around Rs 1.5 lakh crore.
The case before the court involves a government application allowing operators to disseminate their AGR-based license fees and payment of Spectrum usage charges payable Over a period of up to 20 years.
On 17 March, the court terminated the self-assessment of AGR dues by telecom operators.
Meanwhile, Vodafone has told the court that “it is not possible to give a bank guarantee for Rs 50,000 crore due to AGR charges” but said “this spectrum and license can be taken as security.”
