Mumbai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday officially dismissed speculation that it was decided to postpone the T20 World Cup in Australia, which is scheduled to take place from 18 October to 15 November this year. The game’s world governing body, however, said it was “exploring a number of contingency plans to stage the event in light of the Kovid-19 epidemic”.

“The news of the postponement of the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 is inaccurate and planning the event, while the number of contingency plans is being ascertained in view of the rapidly changing public health condition caused by the CZ-19 virus,” ICC A spokesman for TOI told TOI on Wednesday.

It has been reported that the postponement for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in October-November could open a window, something about which the BCCI will not be sad. The all-powerful board of the ICC will hold a tele-conference on Thursday, where there is a long discussion on the issue.

Not asking for beautiful extensions

The ICC also said that its outgoing president, Shashank Manohar, has sought an extension for his tenure, with the coronovirus epidemic affecting the game badly. The ICC Board met yesterday to discuss the process of electing the next ICC President. No final decision was taken about the election process and the subject will be discussed further in the next meeting of the ICC Board on Thursday. The current chairman (Manohar) spokesperson said that he confirmed that he was not seeking any extension for his term, but would support the board and ensure a smooth transition.

Ever since former South African captain Graeme Smith remarked that current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was the role model, there has been speculation that the former India captain could become the next ICC president. The election for the post of ICC chairman is scheduled to be held at the ICC annual conference in July.
