The asteroid-shaped capsule arrived in Japan for research

TOKYO: A small capsule containing soil samples from an asteroid that was dropped from space by Japan’s Hiabos 2 spacecraft and landed in an Australian outback arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday to investigate the origin of the solar system and life on Earth.
The capsule, tightly sealed and carefully stored in a container box, arrived in Japan on an Australian flight, attended by a group of JACA officials, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said.
At the end of its long voyage from the asteroid Ryogo, more than 300 million kilometers (190 million miles) from Earth, Hiabusa 2 released a capsule into space on Saturday from 220,000 kilometers (136,700 miles), and Sent it successfully to land on a target area. A sparsely populated desert in Womira.
At the end of Hiabusa 2’s six-year mission, the highly advanced workmanship delighted many Japanese.
The in-capsule cell analysis is now being delivered to JICA’s research facility at Sagamihara, near Tokyo.
Launched in December 2014, the unmanned Hiabusa 2 spacecraft crashed twice on the asteroid Ryogo last year. Despite the unexpected rocky surface that forced the mission team to reconsider landing plans, the spacecraft successfully collected data and soil samples from two locations above and below ground.
Scientists say the samples, specifically taken from below the asteroid’s surface, contain data that were not affected by high-speed radiation and other environmental factors 4.6 billion years ago. They are particularly interested in studying organic matter in samples to learn how it is distributed in the solar system and, if so, how it is connected to life on Earth.
To avoid any external impact, these samples will be treated in a clean room at the Sagamihera facility, and work is expected to begin soon. After initial studies and treatment in Japan, some of the samples will be shared with NASA and other international scientists for further study.
