New Delhi: Global warming affects the Himalayas, with the Ministry of Earth Sciences planning to measure the depth of glaciers in the region and assess the water available in them, officials said on Sunday.
The project will start in June-July next month. Ministry Secretary M Rajeevan said.
Ravichandran, director of the National Center for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), which carried out the project, said Himanshu, the country’s remote and high-altitude research center, is also studying the Himalayan climate.
The center was established in 2016.
He said, “The plan is to first study seven glaciers in the Chandra river basin.”
The Chandra River is a major tributary of the Chenab River which itself is a tributary of the Indus.
The Himalayan glaciers are a major source of water from the rivers originating there. The Himalayan rivers are also the Indo-Gangetic plains, a lifeline for several million people.
The NCPOR director said, while the area of ​​glaciers is already known with the help of satellites, one needs to know what the volume is.
Ravichandran said, “The purpose of studying the depth of glaciers is to understand the volume. It will also help us understand the availability of water and the glaciers are rising or shrinking,” Ravichandran said.
He said that they would use a radar technology that uses microwave signals. It can penetrate into the ice and reach the rocks, something that satellite images cannot. Signs can help to understand depth after reflecting on rocks.
Ravichandran said, “America and Britain have technology. So we will take help of that technology.”
First, there are plans to use the helicopter that will carry these radars. Once successful, subsequent studies will be carried out in the rest of the Himalayas.
Later, an aircraft or drone can be used to study other glaciers based on radar, Ravichandran noted.
