Pakistan Test captain Azhar Ali on Thursday dismissed reports that he might lose his position, saying that the PCB has not yet spoken to him on the issue.
It is being speculated that Babar Azam may replace Azhar as the next Test captain after Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO Wasim Khan, adding that he cannot confirm that Azhar will travel to New Zealand. Whether will be captain or not.
Azhar told the media at a virtual conference in Karachi, “The PCB has not spoken to me about this and I am also aware of these rumors through the media so I am not in a position to say anything on this.”
The 81-Test veteran was appointed Test captain in October last year and in May the PCB appointed him as captain for the 2020/21 international season for Test matches.
Wasim Khan had said that a meeting would be held on 11 November in which a decision on Test captaincy would be taken.
“What can I say when no one has spoken to me on this subject, I think these are just rumors and nothing else.”
He said, ‘There is no point thinking about these things because I am focusing on first-class matches and international cricket. Look, when someone talks about it officially, I will be in a position to say something, ”Azhar said.
The 35-year-old insisted that captaincy was not a burden for him, adding that even last year when Pakistan was not doing well in Australia, such speculations were being made about the future of his captaincy.
Nausea believes that Azhar could face the ax as captain as punishment for a meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan about changes in Pakistan’s domestic structure. The PCB did not expressly say in the meeting that the players were contracted and should not speak on policy matters of the board.
Azhar struggled for runs during the recent England tour, but he returned to the final Test with a brilliant century in the first innings, which saved the rain-affected match for Pakistan.
