The US ends the ‘zero tolerance’ border policy which creates a family separation situation.

Washington: US President Joe Biden’s administration on Tuesday canceled former President Donald Trump’s policy of “zero tolerance”, leading to the separation of thousands of undivided migrant families.
According to a report issued Tuesday by Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson, federal prosecutors were instructed to pursue individual cases, reports Xinhua reported.
Wilkinson wrote, “Consistent with this long-standing principle of conducting personal assessments in criminal cases, I am spared immediate effect.”
He said the decision to prosecute should be based on whether a person had violated federal law and what evidence was available to prove the violation.
A spokesman for the judicial department said in a statement, “Today’s action restores prosecutors their traditional discretion to make decisions based on careful review of the particular facts and circumstances of individual immigration cases.”
Under the zero tolerance policy, effective April 2018 to June 2018, all adults who enter the US illegally, including children, were referred for prosecution. Any children entering with those adults were separated from them and placed under the patronage of the Department of Health and Human Services.
According to one report, the widely criticized policy led to the separation of more than 5,500 children from their parents, some of whom were deported.
