Geneva: The global coronovirus outbreak is a type of disaster that will have far-reaching effects in the future, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adenom Ghebayeus said on Friday.
“The pandemic is a health crisis once in a century, the effects of which will be felt in the coming decades,” Tedro said at a meeting of the WHO’s emergency committee.
The epidemic has killed more than 670,000 people since it emerged in Wuhan, China, with over 17 million cases diagnosed.
The United States, Brazil, Mexico and Britain have been particularly hard-hit in recent weeks by Kovid-19, as their governments struggle to come up with an effective response.
Economies have been affected by the lockdown restrictions introduced to restrict its spread, while many regions are threatened by a second wave.
Meanwhile, more than 150 pharmaceutical companies are working on vaccines, although their first use cannot be expected until early 2021, the World Health Organization last week
Although information about the new virus has advanced, many questions remain unanswered and the population remains vulnerable, Tedros said on Friday.
“Initial results from serology (antibody) studies are drawing a consistent picture: most people in the world remain susceptible to the virus, even in areas that have experienced severe outbreaks,” They said.
“Many countries that believed they were the worst are now battling new outbreaks. Some who were less affected in the early weeks are now seeing an increase in the number of cases and deaths.”
