Veteran actor Shabana Azmi says she is an optimist by nature and believes that art can nurture a “climate of sensitivity” which in turn can bring about social change.
That’s why, the actor said, he decided to act in “Kali Khushi” (Black Veal), a horror thriller directed by Terry Samundra that explores the lasting impact of female feticide in India right now. A misconduct is also prevalent. Azmi is known for her performances in films such as “Ankur”, “Mandi”, “Ruins”, “Fire”, “Godmother”, the second genre after Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2002 horror comedy “Spider” Looking for
Set in a village in Punjab, the Netflix original film features the journey of a girl named Shivangi (Shiva Arora) who is put to the final examination when she sees her entire family deeply rooted in the mysteries of the black well.
Azmi, 70, said it was “outrageous” that female feticide continues in 21st-century India when addressing it should be the first step towards women’s empowerment.
“Female feticide and infanticide exist all around – not only in the back or beyond but also in our metropolitan cities. And yet we are not as focused on it as we should be. The right to be born is taken away from a girl simply because she is a girl.
“There should be a starting point for any work that you do about a girl who does not have the right to be born. How cruel, unjust and unacceptable? We are a patriarchal society. We entitle the boy from birth to be male only and the girl is made to undergo a lot of discrimination, ”Azmi, also an activist, told PTI in an interview on Zoom.
The National Award winner said that he decided to make his debut in the heart of feature film director Samundra. The actor said that Los Angeles-based Samudra, who has written and directed short films and documentaries including “Kunjo” and “Ice Cream Wala”, told the story in a cinematic “compelling” manner.
“Terry could very easily make it into a documentary that would have its own reach. But the fact that she does it through this thriller makes it more accessible to the audience. My parents always told me that art should be used as an instrument for social change.
“I am not saying that there is an immediate response. You don’t watch the movie ‘Gandhi’ and start behaving like Gandhi the next day. But there is a possibility of creating an atmosphere of sensitivity in all arts, in which change is possible.
The actress, who plays the mysterious woman Satya Masi who went through her past in the film, insisted that “Kali Khohi” is not a “hype”.
“By the end of the film, you think it can’t be allowed to happen. This is the powerful response you can get from a film. Terry has made the film with cinema in mind. It does not become a promotional film. ”
Azmi said that the topic of women empowerment has become more important than a mere trending word on social media, stating that treating women and men equally is the only logical way for the world.
“I am an optimist and when I see the darkness around me instead of being completely overwhelmed, I tell myself that morning is going to happen. I react to things with optimism and hope because I see that Things are cyclical.
“I think that in the current society, the empowerment of women is not just a discussion, it has been because it only makes sense from all perspectives. From an economic, social, materialistic point of view, it makes sense that women and men are considered equal. We are just saying that give them equal opportunities. ”
The actor also warned that the problem lies in defining women as “goddess mothers” as it allows society to deprive them of a fair chance.
“We call her ‘goddess mother’. But I don’t want to be treated as a goddess, I want to be treated as an equal. It’s a convenient way. You have to face the fact that society today sees these genders as equal One cannot afford to do anything except to believe, because where all the emotion lies, ”she said.
Starring Leela Samson, Sanjida Sheikh and Satyadeep Mishra, “Kali Khushi” is produced by Anku Pandey and Ramon Chib.
The film is set to premiere on the streaming platform on 30 October.
