Kingston: The only concern was the well-being of their families Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmeyer And Chemo Paul When he refused to tour England between COVID-19 Universal epidemic, Cricket West Indies Chief executive Johnny Grave has revealed.
Bravo, Hetmeyer and Paul – all contracted all-format players – refused to tour the country for a series next month and Grave said he could understand their reasons and sympathize with them.
Grave told ESPN Cricinfo, “Chemo Paul is the only breadwinner in his entire family and wider family. He was really worried about how his family would cope if something happened to him.”
The 22-year-old Paul, who has played three Tests, 19 ODIs and 18 T20Is for the West Indies, wrote an email to the board explaining his reasons for shortening the tour.
He wrote, “He wrote passionately about how hard he made the decision for himself and how much he liked to play for the West Indies, but in consultation with his family he did not think he could leave and go on tour. Want, ”said Grave.
Grave revealed that Hetmeyer, who has been a consistent player in the Test team since his debut in 2017, also told CWI in an email that he “did not feel comfortable from a safety standpoint, leaving his home, leaving his family in England.” Eliminate “.
Bravo was also concerned about the situation in Britain, where more than 2.70 lakh cases have been reported, and he does not want to leave his young family behind.
He also mentioned that he took his decision with great remorse because playing for the West Indies was always a huge honor for him, ”said Grave.
“So, yes, perfectly valid reasons and those we fully respect. We were never trying to coercion and we did not ask them to reconsider.”
Grave said his decision would not be against the trio as the board also wants players who have no “doubt” about the tour.
“It is in everyone’s interest if you are not comfortable to say so and do not visit and are certain that it is not going to be held against you.
“Instead of going, be anxious, and eventually don’t perform or want to come home. So it’s a good all-round decision. We’re still taking a strong Test side for England.”
The 25-member Caribbean team will fly to England from next Tuesday in chartered flights for the three-match Test series starting on 8 July.
The series, which is held in a bio-safe environment, is expected to resume international cricket, which was closed in March following a health crisis.
