Tigress Sundari returns to Kanha Reserve of MP after calming down

BHUBANESHWAR: Tigress Sundari left for Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday evening in Kanha Tiger Reserve, a special vehicle which has a cage inside the Satkosia Tiger Reserve.
He had to be pacified in the enclosure, where he was kept in Satkosia to be brought into the cage.
Kanha’s five-member team, which came here three days ago to take Sundari back, first tried to cage the fence gate to entice the tigress to get inside. However, the animal showed indifference to the cage and roamed inside the enclosure and forced the team to evacuate and bring it to the cage.
“Sundari was taken inside the cage. After the dart, its health was checked by a team of veterinarians. Then he was taken inside the vehicle, ”said a top wildlife officer.
Kanha will be Sundari’s third house (vas) in three years as he was in Bandhavgarh while being brought to Satkosia. After living in Satkosia for three years, it was transferred to Kanha.
The return of tigress Sundari, currently lodged in an enclosure in the Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, has put a complete halt to the state’s ambitious tiger translation project, thus exposing the Forest Department’s calculations and poor preparedness .
With Sundari’s relocation from Satkosia to Kanha’s Ghorella center, where it will go wild again, the ambitious first inter-state translation project comes to an end. Satkosia was to receive three pairs of Royal Bengal Tiger (RBT) from different sanctuaries of MP in phases.
In the first phase, it received a male and a female RBT. The male (MB2) was allegedly killed by predators by planting snails. Sundari reportedly developed a man-eating tendency forcing the Odisha government to back it.
In December 2019, the NTCA wrote to the then Odisha Chief Secretary Asit Tripathi to immediately return the tigress and said that it could no longer be allowed to be kept in a small enclosure.
“In the interest of tiger conservation, it will be withdrawn with immediate effect. According to the NTCA protocol, the tiger translation project in Satkosia will remain suspended until the ground situation in the region improves according to the NTCA protocol.
“Sundari will be placed in the Gorella again in the wild center. He will be kept to see if the wild behavior returns to him. Then, we will be able to decide on his further release to Junglee, ”said Kanha region director SK Singh.
