Washington: The Pentagon has announced that a militia member was killed and two others were injured in US airstrikes in eastern Syria last week.
According to the news agency Xinhua, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday, “We believe there was a possibility of one militia member being killed and two militia members feared wounded.”
“We’ll continue to evaluate, as you know we do, and if that changes, we’ll definitely let you know,” Kirby said.
On 25 February, the US military carried out airstrikes against facilities used by Iranian-backed terrorist groups in eastern Syria to transport arms, personnel and supplies from across the border to Iraq.
According to the Pentagon, the airstrikes were authorized in response to recent attacks against US and coalition personnel in Iraq.
It added that nine facilities were completely destroyed, while two others were damaged.
It was the first major military operation since President Joe Biden took office two months ago.
The day after the attacks, Syria and Iran strongly condemned the US move.
