Max Verstappen gave Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton the fastest running time in the final practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix before qualifying on Saturday.
The Red Bull driver was .26 ahead of Hamilton and .37 ahead of Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.
Hamilton was the fastest in both practice runs on Friday and was set to make a hat-trick when he left Bottas and Verstappen in an hour-long session. But Verstappen returned and returned to the top of the leaderboard.
Hamilton recently achieved a record-equaling seventh F1 title and is bidding for a record-expanding 98th career position.
But he could face competition from Verstappen, who is only bidding for his third poll.
Alexander Albon’s Red Bull was fitted with a new chassis after accidentally crashing heavily in the second practice. Albon did well this time and finished fourth.
Hamilton and other drivers have complained about the new Pirelli tires, saying they are too heavy and Wittel calling them worse than before.
