Former Finland’s Formula One champion Kimi Räikkönen is retained by the team along with his “second family” Alfa Romeo along with teammate Antonio Giovinazzi for next season.

Raikkonen, who won the world champion driving for Ferrari in 2007, will be able to increase the number of Grand Prix records he set earlier this season.

The 41-year-old, known as ‘The Iceman’ – twice runner-up at the World Championships – will compete in his 19th season at the highest level.

Giovinazzi, 26, is Ferrari’s reserve driver and used his ability to this season to give him another campaign – Ferrari controlled one of the Alpha seats.

The day after the announcement, Alfa Romeo confirmed its commercial deal for the brand and returned to the Swiss-based team that began their lives in 1993 as Sauber at F1.

Raikkonen, who made his debut with Sauber in 2001, said after a second stint with Ferrari in 2019 before returning him that the team was like a home from home for him.

“It’s more than a team for me; It is like a second family, ”he said.

He said, “When I started F1 in 2001, many of the faces around me are still here and this team has a unique atmosphere that gives me extra motivation to move forward.

“This is a team that values hard work on words and it fits well with my style.”

Raikkonen, who ranks 17th in the drivers’ standings with double digits this season, said he hopes he and Giovinazzi can step up a gear next season and challenge for more points.

Alfa Romeo said the line-up highlighted the team’s “commitment to continuity”.

“I still see the passion and inspiration in Kimi every time I see her at work,” team owner Frederick Wasseypur said.

He said, “He can be trusted to bring the production of the car to 100% and he is the true leader of the people working around him.”

“Antonio emphatically ended last year’s campaign and picked up where he left off and kept improving until 2020.”

Raikkonen and Giovinazzi will try to repay the confidence placed in them with a decent performance at this weekend’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
