Samue Chukwuezke and Pau Torres scored first-half goals as Villarreal beat final-placed Valladolid 2–0 to move to third in the Spanish League on Monday.
Unai Emery’s team dominated from the start at Ceremica Stadium, reaching the board with Chukwuze’s shot from inside the area in the 21st minute and connecting Torres’ goal in the 37th to close range.
Gerard Moreno was ruled out by a video review in the second half after a foul by the hosts ahead of the ball into the net.
The win put Villarreal behind second-placed Real Madrid and two short of leader Real Sociedad. Madrid have a game in their hands.
The result extended Valladolid’s winless run this season. It is the only team to have won the league yet, with its promotion. The club, owned by Brazilian great Ronaldo, has only three points from eight matches.
