New Delhi: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat and his personal Om Prakash Dahiya have tested positive for Kovid-19 and will not attend the ‘Virtual’ National Sports Day awards ceremony on Saturday. Vinesh and Dahiya were set to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Dronacharya awards respectively at the Sonepat Sai Center. Vinesh and Dahiya gave the Kovid-19 examination on Thursday and also participated in the rehearsal of the award at the SAI Center on Wednesday. It is learned that two other awardees, Kabaddi players Deepak Hooda (Arjun) and Manpreet Singh (Dhyanchand), who were present during the rehearsal when Vinesh and Dahiya were around, were asked by the officials to skip the award ceremony at SAI Was. Meanwhile, Haryana mountaineer Narendra Singh, who was alleged to have credited Mount Everest with victory, will not be presented with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2020 on Saturday. The Sports Ministry on Friday ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter after allegations by some Indian mountaineers that Singh had morphed photographs of him to successfully climb Everest in 2016.
His award was withheld until the investigation in his case was completed. Singh, who even attended the rehearsal ceremony, was informed of the ministry’s decision to withhold his award. SAI informed on Friday that a total of 14 of the 74 awardees selected will be absent from the virtual awards ceremony. Apart from Vinesh, Dahiya, Satvikasairaj (Parikshit Positive Positive) and Singh (Awarded in Absence), others who have been remembered at the ceremony include cricketers Rohit Sharma (Khel Ratna) and Ishant Sharma, golfer Aditi Ashok, tennis Players Divij Sharan (all Arjun) and football coach Sukhwinder Singh (Dhyanchand). Other absentees will be former tennis player Naresh Kumar (Dronacharya lifelong), hockey player Deepika (Arjun), former boxer Lakha Singh (Dhyanchand) and Hawaii Adventure Award winner Gajanand Yadav.
