PARIS: Stan Wawrinka announced on Monday that he was separating from his coach Magnus Norman “by mutual consent”, ending an eight-year collaboration during which the Swiss won their three Grand Slam tournaments.
Wawrinka, now 35, finished third in the world in 2014 when he won the Australian Open. He won at Roland Garros the following year and at the US Open in 2016.
Wawrinka wrote on Instagram of her bond with the Swedish coach, “We have had an amazingly strong, enjoyable and extremely successful partnership.”
“We got to the height of this game together and I want to thank him for helping me win everything I could ever dream of winning. He has been a great coach, friend and mentor and always a Dear friend.
Wawrinka is one of the few to break the hegemony of the Big Three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic – he and Andy Murray are the only players to win multiple Grand Slam contests after three.
Wawrinka said, “Winning the Grand Slam has been a life-changing experience for me and I couldn’t have done it without him (Norman).”
