NEW DELHI: In an unusual move, Aces lifter Mirabai Chanu has been nominated for the Arjuna Award by the National Federation, although the former world champion is already awarded the Khel Ratna, the country’s highest sporting honor.

The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) has nominated Chanu along with Ranu Venkat Rahul and Punam Yadav.

Chanu received the Khel Ratna in 2018 along with Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli. He was also awarded the Padma Shri – the country’s fourth highest civilian award – in the same year.

The 25-year-old, who received the twin honors after winning the 2017 Weightlifting World Championship in USA, says an honor is associated with the Arjuna Award, so she wouldn’t mind getting it after the ‘Khel Ratna’.

Meerabai told PTI, “I know that Khel Ratna is supreme but I missed the Arjuna Award before and I want the same. Sometimes you all want. Players like to get Arjuna Award. ”

He said, “I also applied for the Arjuna Award in 2018. We then applied for both the Arjuna Award and the Khel Ratna.”

Asked if an athlete, who has already been awarded the Khel Ratna, could be nominated for the Arjuna Award, IWLF general secretary Sahadev Yadav said “it is possible.”

After recovering from a back injury, which married his progress in 2018, Chanu further improved his performance in 2019.

He picked up a personal best of 86 kg in Snatch and 113 kg in Clean and Jerk for a total of 199 kg at the Asian Championships in April last year, but missed out on a bronze medal by the whisker.

His best performance came at the World Championships in September, when Manipuri broke the much-awaited 200 kg mark, improving his personal best in all three categories. In the snatch, she lifted 87 kg, followed by 114 kg total of 201 kg in clean and jerk.

The 23-year-old Rahul, who won several medals in the junior circuit, won two gold Commonwealth Championships and also won the yellow metal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

On the other hand, Poonam won silver in the Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championship and Gold in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The last lifter to receive the Arjuna Award was two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Satish Shivlingam in 2015.
