Neck pain while crunching does not mean that you are strengthening your neck muscles. This indicates that your form is not correct.
Most people who crunch have stiffness and pain in their neck muscles. The reason is that they crunch with their upper body, which should basically be entangling the abdominal muscles. Ideally when crunching you have to lift the upper half of your body which includes your neck and shoulders. Some people lift more than the upper half of their body. Because of this, disrupting the normal curve of the spine can cause their head to fall backward, causing a stretch in the neck muscles. While crunching, your spine should start from your lower back to your head. If your head hurts, you can put extra pressure to bring it up and experience neck pain.
