If World TeamTennis finds its way, Grand Slam champions Sophia Kenin and Sloan Stephens may be among the first tennis players to compete in front of fans following a worldwide lockout due to the coronovirus epidemic.

The WT said it plans to allow up to 500 spectators to each of its outdoor matches during a three-week season from July 12 to August 2 at a resort in West Virginia on Tuesday.

The league announced a $ 5 million increase in total prize money this year, more than $ 1.5 million for the 2019 season.

All tennis programs approved by ATV, WTA and the International Tennis Federation are on hold until at least the end of July due to the outbreak of COVID-19. It also included the French Open, which was to begin its 15-day main draw on Sunday, but was postponed until September and Wimbledon, which was canceled outright for the first time in 75 years.

But WTT is not affiliated with those tours – no ATP or WTA ranking points are available for its matches – and while it is fine to compete, they are not required to follow their decisions.

Due to the epidemic, World TeamTain is bringing all nine of its teams to a site – The Greenbrier in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia – rather than matches played around the United States.

And unlike smaller exhibition tennis events around the world, which have not been staged without any fans, the WT intends to sell tickets for one-sixth of the 3,000-seat outdoor stadium.

If necessary, an indoor court will also be established; Viewers will not be allowed to watch there.

WT CEO Carlos Silva said in a recent interview that he is monitoring other sports events to see how he handled health protocols, including UFC Fights and NASCAR Racing. None of those games allowed viewers to make their returns in this month.

WT said that among the players who will participate in the match are Kenin, who won the Australian Open in January, before tennis was suspended due to the virus in March; Stephens, 2017 US Open champion and 2018 French Open runner-up; And twins Bob and Mike Bryan, who as a team have won 16 Grand Slam titles in men’s doubles.
